Finally they reached Berlin. The area was a cauldron of activity: searchlights sweeping the skies everywhere, flak barrages so dense and extensive that there was no way of evading or bypassing them. And of course, right behind the flak the place was swarming with German fighters having a field night. The intercom came alive with exclamations from the crew-members who had a good view ahead: the skipper, bomb aimer and mid gunner.

“Good God, there’s a party going on!”

“Hold on to your hats, we’re joining the scrum!”

“Flak ahead! Flak ahead! There’s no avoiding it!”

The sound of shell explosions outside the aircraft became louder and louder; the bomber started to shake; shrapnel hit the fuselage like pebbles thrown violently against a windowpane. Daisy froze in her seat, mentally bracing herself: this was the deadly lottery Ralph had often mentioned, where chance alone determined how much damage an aircraft and its crew would sustain. On the other hand, Ralph had also explained, you had to trust the laws of physics, the inverse-square law: the intensity of a burst of shrapnel should be inversely proportional to the square of the distance from its source—the exploding shell. Only very close strikes were really dangerous. But still, some bombers were unlucky and took a full hit.

At some distance from them, another Lanc suddenly exploded, all of its bomb load and what was left of its fuel igniting at once. They heard a tremendous boom. The sky around them was briefly illuminated by a burst of erupting flame spreading forth at 180 knots, the flight speed of the bomber. “Good Lord! Those poor chaps certainly went off with a bang!” the skipper cried. “There’s no way anyone could have survived that!”

A tense voice commented, “You know, Daisy, right now you’re lucky to be blind. There are some things you’d just rather not see.”

“I know, Tim, this is certainly one of them.”

Then several of their machine guns started firing at once, and as soon as they stopped shooting D for Daisy lurched violently in another attempt at evasive action. “Careful skipper, bombers and fighters all over the place!”

“We’ll just have to take our chances!”

“Welcome to the scrum!”

Again, the inverse-square law… hopefully.
